Q: Tell us about your background as a live television broadcast audio mixer.
A: I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of the highest quality audio for live music and television broadcasts. I have won 2 EMMY’s (and 10 nominations) for my work with NBC at the 2012 Olympic games in London and with ESPN at the 2018 US Open tennis championships. The head of NBC Olympic audio (Karl Malone) calls me the “Audio Specialist”. I mixed the first ever live Dolby Atmos broadcast at the 2016 Olympic opening ceremonies in Rio, and the first live golf in Dolby Atmos at the 2020 US Open.
Q: How did you get into aerial cinematography?
A: I have been a stills photographer for many years. Soon after moving to Sedona, hiking among the beautiful landscape with my camera, I kept hearing myself say the same thing over and over. “If I could just get my camera around the other side of the tree or rock. How big of a ladder would I have to have to get a shot over that tree” and so on. I was totally stuck in the mindset that only a high end DSLR could get me the image quality I demanded. I know why it took me so long to consider a drone. The drones that could carry a heavy DSLR camera cost well over $5000, so I never even considered a drone. And I never even considered video. I was stuck in a “stills photography” only mindset.
A year later I revisited the drone idea. The camera quality had increased dramatically, and the cost had come down. I was ready.
The first day I took my new drone out to fly, I was blown away at the quality. My drone has the best camera I own (at that time). I was also in awe at this whole new concept of video. To this day I do take still photos from my drone but moving pictures from a moving aerial camera has fully taken over.
Q: What is your background image?
A: I absolutely love this background image. It is a pilots sectional chart. In order to become a drone pilot, I had to learn how to read VFR (Visual Flight Rules) sectional charts. So yes, I do know what all of the symbols, numbers and lines mean on the background image. The most interesting thing about this chart is, if you look closely, you can see the chart is for the surrounding Sedona area.
Q: What does the “UAS” in Sedona UAS mean?
A: The Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, created the term Unmanned Aircraft System or UAS in 2005. Even though the media is still stuck on the term drone, the official Acronym is UAS. Another appropriate acronym is UAV for Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle. The aviation community uses the term UAS where hobbyists or nonprofessionals are still using the term drone.
Q: What is the best way to get a hold of you?
A: I travel often, so email is my preferred method of communication. Texts are also welcomed.
